Zenonesque Power – interview w/ KROMAGON
For some more of that zenonesque power tune in on radiOzora’s Zenon Records Series featuring KROMAGON, prog-psy side of Nikroma, and while you’re at it, read a bit about what Nic Aragon has to say about it all.
– What were some of the events or experiences that set you off on this journey?
– In 2008 I discovered Psychedelic Freakshow, a Halloween psytrance festival in Southern California. I got linked up with a brand new collective called Terrakroma after watching them perform there. At that time they focused on the deep old-school progressive sound and techno. After helping them with an event, I was asked to become a member, and Andrew Kroma aka Bellhop, one of the founders of the Terrakroma crew dubbed me Nikroma (a combination of my first name, Nic and Terrakroma). I dj’ed as Nikroma and soon after started releasing original zenonesque style techno under my Nikroma project, with labels like Glitchy Tonic, Digital Mind, and Zenon Records just to name a few.
– How was your alter ego born? (What stands behind the name of your project?)
– As I got more into the faster and heavier sound, I started dj’ing and producing dark prog/psygressive. Artists like Hypogeo, Kained and Able, Cujorius One, Old Sensient and Cold Project became a huge Influence for me. I decided to make a new project focused more on that sound. Kromagon was a name given to me by my good friend Kerry, who would yell it out when I would dj this style. Kromagon is a combination of my last name, Aragón and Terrakroma.
– Who have your greatest teachers been, your greatest inspirations? Musically speaking, who has had the greatest influence on your musical soundscapes?
– Sensient, Hypogeo, Grouch.
– How has your sound, your taste in music developed throughout the years?
– I grew up in the California rave culture as well as the local metal scene. That was my first love of electronic music and that dark and heavy sound. I learned to dj drum n bass and trance on vinyl at 17 and spent a few years doing that until I found the local psychedelic /desert community and started to dj psychedelic techno and progressive. I became a regular at parties such as Moontribe, Psytribe, Greensector, and Terrakroma. From that point, the Kromagon project emerged.
– Which one of your releases/tracks are the most characteristic of your sounds or stand the closest to you for some reason?
– I think the track that properly describes my current style would have to be Maximal Degressive, out on Zenon Records’ 10 year compilation. But my real identity will come out in my upcoming debut album, RAVINGS OF A MADMAN, which has been in the works for the last 4 years.
– What projects are you involved in? (Or would love to experiment with?)
– My psy-techno project; Nikroma. A collaboration project with Hypogeo, Anx and Every; Cheese Collective. My main act on Zenon Records; Kromagon. And I’m also working on some halftime drum n bass not yet released!
– Who do you think are the most cutting-edge newest sound makers in the scene? Who are your newest discoveries?
– Alchemy Circle from Brazil!
– Scene at home?
– The local psychedelic dance community here in California is small, but very special. We are a group of dedicated dancers, music lovers, and artists. For me, the most influential parties to note are Moontribe, Psytribe, and Symbiosis.
– Most memorable gigs, experiences?
– My first Live international gig, Aho Festival in Brazil 2012/2013. The first international festival I attended, Freqs Of Nature 2012. The first time I saw a Zenon artist live, Grouch 2011 at Orange Vortex in California.
– Musically speaking what’s still on your bucket list? If it wasn’t this, what would it be?
– My biggest goal for years has been to release my debut album. I’m very happy to announce that it is scheduled to be released on Zenon Records very soon!!!
– What are your other passions in life?
– Automotive Industry, specifically tuning/modifying and driving Japanese vehicles.
– What are you working on at present? What are you looking forward to the most?
– My upcoming debut album, RAVINGS OF A MADMAN! Soon to be released on Zenon Records.
