The Queen of Trance – interview /w MIRANDA

Even if you yourself don’t agree with being labeled “The Queen of Trance”, there were not many female DJs and producers back in 1994 when you started making and playing music. You say you happened “to slip into the scene on a banana… and did not break any legs” – interview /w MIRANDA

– Tell us a bit about that certain banana:) How did it begin really? What do you consider your musical roots and main inspirations?

– My roots are Jean Michel Jarre, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk etc from the 70-80s that my parents happened to play a lot. So I grew up with this psychedelic music, which was normal for me. And as you say there were 0 females making music in this game back in 1994 and there are still not many like me doing their own music, so I guess somehow I earned the title but for me I’m just me.

So in 1992-1994 I went to a lot of underground parties and used a lot of drugs and after a while I did a track with a friend who happened to make something like Euro-trance which was the first edition of Mars Needs Women. And I got it right away. I took that track on a DAT-tape to DJ Anti (Spiral Trax owner) who was really big for us back then. He liked the track and said he was going to play it and I still remember the first time I stood there on the dancefloor and I could hardly breath because I was so nervous to hear it for the first time on the huge PA. And no one except me and DJ Anti knew who did it. People loved it when it came on and I was so happy at that point and that track became an underground hit.

So I decided to make my own music and I gave it a try and I went to buy all things needed like a Atari computer and my first multitimbral Roland synth and a Ensoniq sampler and I slowly started learning Cubase. My first tracks got released through DJ Anti and he was really surprised that I did it all on basically nothing. I struggled so much in the beginning to learn the technical part of it but I got it faster and faster because I was so determined to do it.
I never realized that I was that good and I was surprised that I got my first really bad tracks released but it worked so well on the dancefloor where all tracks were played to see how people react to it back then. But I had a different sound and that was what was needed to get me somewhere.

But it took a long time before people really accepted that I was a girl/woman who did it and there were many rumors around but that made me think: Ok, I will show you who I am. So I started to play live after some releases.
And when I entered the stages around Europe and people looked at me first they thought I was just some girl from the crew or something. But I loved to see people’s jaws drop when I started my sets and played tracks like Gnocchi and other hits. People didn’t understand what just hit them really. Such an awesome adrenaline-kick I guess no guy will ever have. And that by a small short girl from nowhere 😉

– For many you are one of the hero(ines) of the golden age of goa and psychedelic trance. How did you experience this revolutionary period? Who were some of the other artists around when you guys started creating what is now an ever-expanding psytransatlantic reality?

Like everybody else I was just someone on the dancefloor hearing this unbelievable music from all the artists like Astral Projection – Mahadeva, Hallucinogen – LSD that just came out on DAT.
And that was my inspiration at that point.

– Then you kind of disappeared for a while. Why, where? What were you up to till now? What are your other passions? What are your working on?

– I ran out of ”gas” and I got bored of it all. I struggled with no inspiration and all the parties looked and sounded the same and I don’t know… I was fed up really. I had released so much and played almost every weekend, so I guess I burned myself out. So I moved out to the forest and lived quite isolated there for many years. Then I decided: Well, it’s time to come back and see what’s going on. And it still looks quite the same but finally with better sound. haha

– Did you keep track of what was happening in the scene during your ‘break’, how it has evolved? What do you think are some major changes, for the better or worse?

After 2000 it all became so commercial, which I knew earlier, but then I just disappeared and couldn’t care less at that point.

– I personally still go a bit nostalgic-crazy when I listen to Mars Need Women, for example. How does psytrance need women?

– Good question… Haha, I don’t think you need us at all because there are only guys behind the decks. But you sure need women for all other things here on earth. 😉

– You consider your Gnocchi track your biggest hit. Are there any other tracks, releases that stand out to you for some reason and have stood the test of time? And why ‘gnocchi’?

– Gnocchi came out in 1996 on vinyl EP and had a major impact on the dancefloor which I had no idea about when I did it. But people really loved that metallic kick and the delayed baseline so it was a huge hit back then. So for me that track is one of my best releases ever. And many people agree that that track is still amazing. I’m so honored for that really.

– Any plans for a long-term revival or are you just going with the flow of things? Where would you like things to flow towards?

– As always I’m just hanging around and have no idea where it’s going to take me, so I will just go with the acid-flow, but without the acid. 😀

– This year at O.Z.O.R.A. we’re especially reaching back to our roots, in many ways, so it will be an all-embracing experience for many of us with you performing as well. You haven’t been yet. What are your expectations, if any? What are you looking forward to the most?

– Well I’m still a bit amazed Ozora asked me to join this year and it is a dream come true to be able to be a part of this massive gathering.

But you have been doing this since 1999 so how many artists are there left to book who haven’t been here yet? So when I think like that, I do understand why you booked me to this circus of joy and craziness.
And I will for sure play all those hits people love and put my small fingerprint on the history of Ozora. It will be my pleasure to do it and I hope you all like it. So… at Ozora 2016 I will see you all… somewhere out there. 😉
