“The exquisite internationalism of our scene” – YOUNG KIM
On 26th December Saturday radiOzora’s focus will be on YOUNG KIM and his first radiOzora appearance based on his upcoming album TOTEMISM 2. His mix is paired with the following interview.
– What were some of the key events that got you involved in psytrance? (How does your story begin…?)
– First outdoor ‘goa trance’ party, aged 18, Ibiza. Occasional visits to the Etnica / Pleiadians studio in Milan, late 90’s. Moving to London for university; r esidencies at 2 psytrance events: FAIRY TALES and CHICHIME. While I was in London, Max [Etnica], who had just established Etnicanet Records in Ibiza, asked me to join the label.
– How was your alterego born? What stands behind the name of your project?
– After several years of activity as DJ, producing came as a natural next step. In 2006, I was invited to join Arkanoydz by Giotto Bini and Andrea Rizzo. Giotto had already collaborated with Etnica on several occasions, while Andrea was a founding member of Etnica & Pleiadians. Our debut album “Type One” was released in 2007 on Australian label Sonic Dragon. Second album “Type Two” is on its way. The name of the project itself is an inside joke. Serendipitously, it also harks back to a childhood video game most of us are quite familiar with.
– Musically speaking, have there been any unusual inspirations? (Who have your greatest teachers been?)
– Living & performing in cities like London and Sao Paulo were probably the biggest influence as far as music. Seoul night life, life in Milan. Lots of hip hop during my teens. Studio sessions with Mauri [Etnica], fellow Arkanoydz Giotto and Andrea; living with Marcello [M-Theory] and Nova [Ultimae] in London.
– Your most ‘psychedelic’ or life-changing experience so far? Where to start?
– I know Aged 19, during totality at SOLIPSE ’99 Festival in Ozora.
– Have you experienced any noticeable changes in the scene since you became a part of it?
– Yes, I think there have been quite a few changes, yet in many ways it’s still the same. The most obvious change that comes to my mind is in the music itself: production, sound quality, new directions, sub-genres… Playing it on vinyl, DATs, CDs, USBs… new ways of playing, promoting and distributing. Social media, YouTube… I guess the same could be said about virtually everything else: the festivals, the way people dance, new generations… One constant that has stayed the same, fortunately, is the exquisite internationalism of our scene.
– Who do you think are the most cutting-edge newest sound makers in the scene? Who are your newest discoveries?
– In their time, quite a few: X-Dream, Pleiadians, The Delta, “Top of the Tips” compilation, Infected Mushroom’s “The Gathering”. Flying Rhino, Atomic Records, Spiral Trax. Reefer Decree, Cosma, Atmos, Haldolium, XV Kilist… Wizzy Noise’s “Cyclotron” album. ”Scientific Reality” by Astrix. Synthetic’s vinyls on Twisted. Sub 6’s “To Experience” and “Indian Jackpot”, Wrecked Machines, Species, and Protoculture, among others. At the moment, examples I consider ‘cutting-edge’ include Eat Static [not a ‘new discovery’ but keeps on impressing], Tesseract Studios, Ultimae Rec… Technically, I’d say Waio is quite cutting-edge.
And to finish off, newly-signed prospect: TILT from our label is surely a name to be watched.
– If it wasn’t psytrance, what would it be? What is ‘just a perfect day’ in your version?
– I’d spend my perfect day either travelling or at home enjoying the company of my lady & my corgi. Apart from the music, I also manage a fashion agency in Milan and have recently started a small wine business.
– Which one of your releases/tracks are the most characteristic of your sounds or stand the closest to you for some reason?
– Tracks that in my opinion best capture the Arkanoydz style: Lothlorien [Xmas release on Spiral Trax], our bootleg of The KLF’s Rites of Mu,The Realm rmx [BMSS], The Object Rmx [from “Totemism”], Capricorn 15 [epic remix by Eat Static coming soon on “Totemism 2”], The Train Song [with Etnica] & Evidence from our debut album Type One. Astrobot [Ultragroove] is a good example of my own sound, which is evident again on my first solo track Maitreya [on “Totemism 2”].
– What are you working on at present? Upcoming?
– At the moment I’m working on the second Arkanoydz album [Type Two], and compiling “Totemism 3”. 2016 will be a busy year at Etnicanet we’ve got quite a few releases lined up which we’re excited about, including a new Pleiadians album, Totemism 3, a string of digital EP’s, and a long overdue 1st v/a compilation from one of our most iconic household names.
