“It’s all about catching the right frequency!” – interview w/ Master Minded
When the passion for making psychedelic music takes over, it’s Master Minded In Focus with his new Fungi Steps. For his visionary storytelling tune in at 8pm CET on 4 December on radiOzora’s Chill channel, and here you can read another kind of tale, best read audioillustrated.
– You started Master Minded in early 2000, as you say, when the passion for making electronic music took over… What was before that? What kind of passions lead you to create Master Minded?
– Well, as a teengaer I grew up on a lot of psychedelic music from all sorts and styles and genres.
At some point I came to experience some really simple music production softwares, I didn’t really know what I was doing… just experiencing.
Then a day came and somehow I got logic platinum 5.5 (yeah it was a loooong time ago)
At that point, the possibilities I had, the rhythms I could make out in my head and just “write it down” in a software amazed me.
Then the vision of making electronic music got really stuck in my head. It took me a while to go out and start publishing for some reasons – had a serious bug in my computer that had deleted all of my music and softwares and it really shook me hard. Then I decided to take a break for some time because I was afraid it’ll happen again.
After a few years at a friend’s wedding, another friend somehow made me get over it and told me that I have to start producing again, and releasing it to the world.
– And how has your musical taste shaped and changed since you started producing?
– Well, I grew up in a Middle Eastern home, listening to a lot of Arabic music – especially from Yemen and Egypt. So you may say I had that vibe from the very beginning. Throughout the years i’ve had visions of creating much more shamanic and tribal vibe and this is what came out today
– Who were your greatest teachers, inspirators, discoveries – then and now?
– I’d say everyone is both a teacher and a student. I have learned a lot from others, but mostly the main production process I discovered through just trying.
Ozric Tentacles, E.C.T, Kalya Scintilla, Ott, Dave Tipper, and man, so many more and every day I find new inspirations.
– What comes to your mind as really monumental Master Minded experiences, gigs, moments?
S.U.N. Festival – the set started in a nice sunny moment, and at the last track of the set that is dedicated to the water element – it started raining It was a very nice feeling. And on Lost Theory – seeing everyone connecting to my music and dancing in the rain. There is no better satisfaction than knowing that they don’t care about getting wet because they are so connected at the moment. Amazing feeling.
– What are some of the challenges you have faced or you face?
– Mostly some lack of confidence in my music sometimes – but I’m working on it
– Difficult question but – best ever tracks for you, from others… and from yourself?
– That is a really difficult question indeed The whole “funkerpump” album by Soulacybin. That relates to Kalya Scintilla as well. Dave Tipper’s latest album and EPs – true masterpieces.
– There is a quote you highlight:
If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, If its morals are good or bad, The quality of its MUSIC will furnish the answer.” ― Confucius.
what does the quality of our music, the music of the scene say about the morals of our psy-kingdom, so to say…
– I have a very simple answer for that – it’s all about catching the right frequency!
– Collaborations? Side projects?
– Collaborations with Somatoast, Tribone, Halfred, and soon a few more.
– Upcoming album Fungi Steps on Merkaba Music…?
– Still working on it – it will contain my latest gathering of emotions and understandings from visions and experiences throughout the last year.
– Tell us a bit about the mix we’re going to listen to…
– The mix will include tracks from different albums – in every single set I make my main intention is to bring the listener to a true journey with a variety of breaks, sustains, different beats – to make one story with ups and downs. Just how I feel about a single track.
