Neo-renaissance – Morgan Mandala & Randal Roberts (USA)

MIRADOR @ O.Z.O.R.A. 2017 – Since we consider that the live art presence at Festivals originates from the States – especially California, we try to bring this culture closer to you by inviting incredible artists from that scene. Our choice falls on Morgan and Randal this time, because this gives us the opportunity to show You how art connects and flows in its finest glory when love is involved! These splendid artists form a gorgeous couple in life as well. You will be able to follow their work in the MIRADOR and around it, as well as on the Main Stage during their live painting performance!

“While it is arguable that all art is visionary, I see the category of ‘visionary art’ as a neo-renaissance – artists who are being inspired by or depicting spiritual visions or visionary realms, as well reviving interest in ancient symbolism and geometric ideals. While I would say that many of my paintings are “visionary,” I have a lot of work that focuses on intuition and flowing with the experience of creation. My visionary style paintings are often derived from dreams and/or visions with Ayahuasca and other plant medicines.

Imagery, sensations, beings, and messages from these sources have been quite important through many aspects of my life,

so I am naturally interested in exploring them visually. Each painting has a story, even though I may discover it in the process. I also leave room for spontaneity. This allows me to be guided by the layers of paint or textures to inform the objects that come forth.

If there is any other hobby that inspires my painting, it would probably be hiking. I live next to the mountains, and get addicted to having a little bit of wilderness in my life to remind me of my smallness and the power of the earth. I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, USA. I started drawing as a child, and my interest in making art was strong throughout childhood. I struggled in the city, which was void of nature and culture, and full of drugs and disparities. Art was my only true escape until I moved to Colorado in 2006.

In Colorado (especially over the past 6 years or so), the Visionary Art / Live Painting presence may rival any in the world! There are about 50 working artists within a 50 mile radius. We flourish best, I believe, as a creative community. Visionary artists support and uplift each other rather than compete, and the family grows quickly. The fairly mild climate and impressive Rocky Mountains make quite an inspiring place to live. The marijuana and open-minded vibe of Colorado has also helped quite a bit with Visionary Art interest and support. 🙂

I see my art as my practice, my therapy, my love, and my challenge. If I had to boil it down, an overall message in my art is unity in multiplicity. Observing the infinite facets of life, perception, and expression throughout human culture has inspired me to weave together humanity’s different ways of conveying the same idea. This theme is continued in my collaborations with Randal Roberts in our live Portal Series Paintings. The point of light in our portals is “the One,” or your “true self,” and the swirling forms around the light are the complexities, fascinations, and absurdities of life that may distract from the light. I hope viewers at least get any positive feeling from my art, and perhaps begin to see objects and their meaning in a new way.”

Morgan Mandala and Randal Roberts are a visionary co-creative couple who weave their artistic processes to create a unified vision. Known also for their work as individuals, together they create large scale collaborative paintings forming a third element between them; a new visual language of brightly colored, vivid, ornamental psychedelia and love.

Morgan and Randal begin each event with a blank canvas, and add to the festival experience by allowing event attendees to see and be involved in the creative process from the start. The duo incorporates elements of their surroundings and move with enthusiasm toward a finished painting by the end of each event.
