Alternate remedies: Yumeiho massage
HEALING AT O.Z.O.R.A. #4 – In this new series you can learn more about the various healing techniques and methods that you’ll find at O.Z.O.R.A. 2015, where you can also try our therapists’ services. Mirella Keller (yumeiho massage) has also answered our questions.
– What would you tell a ‘traveler from a distant land’ who came to you exhausted (and hurt) about the YUMEIHO healing method?
The yumeiho treatment is a massage technique that originates from Japan and is carried out on the treated person in clothes, on the ground (on a tatami). There is always a short diagnosis before the massage and I can decide what kind of treatment I need to give based on the assessment, which includes several questions as well. The treatment itself consists of stretching and rocking movements with a compressive technique on the meridians, aimed at restoring the body’s (and so the spirit’s) balance.
– How did you get in contact with this healing method, what made you choose and stick to it?
– I was still in high school when I got into contact with yumeiho. My best friend’s mom was a yumeiho therapist so we both started learning this technique one summer. Since then I have learned about many other kinds of treatment but I feel that yumeiho is more complex, effective and harmonious than the rest and I still love doing it although 12 years have passed:) and even if the technique is fixed, it can still be deepened, refined. For me yumeiho massage is natural and exciting at the same time.
– How long have you been learning this method, what level are you on?
– I have been learning it for 12 years, I have a level III Japanese diploma. The first level is the learning stage, after the second level you can start doing massage but only with supervision, the third level enables you to give treatment independently, the fourth makes you an assistant instructor, the fifth makes you an instructor and there are levels above this as well, but no functional differences.
– What is your perspective on the healer-patient relationship?
– I believe that the people who come to me for treatment are people I can help. I focus on the patients to the best of knowledge and with full attention. The nature of the relationship that forms between us depends on them. There are some who talk, some who ask questions, but there are also people who just sigh from time to time.
– If you have already been at Ozora, in your opinion, how does healing fit in with the essence of the festival?
– This is what makes it whole, beauty, happiness, health…
– A personal question: which programs do you like to participate in in your free time at the festival?
– I like lectures, arts and crafts workshops, dancing until dawn, but the reason why I like being at Ozora the most is because the people are beautiful and free:)
