“Sound has taught me a lot…” – interview w/ INSANE CREATURES

INSANE CREATURES gave us her sounds to kick off the Purple Hexagon Records series on radiOzora and in the meantime Angela Flo a.k.a GELIKA / TYNDRA also shared her thoughts on inspirations, experiences and all else paving the way of her musical journey. Best read audio-illustrated!

– What were some of the key events that inspired or got you involved in psytrance?

–
The first contact with Psytrance was about 15 years ago. At that moment, still very young, I was into a music genre called “Makina” , which is slightly popular in Spain and comes pretty much from the industrial hardcore. My good friend Andrea insisted that I must listen to Psytrance, and she played various songs from GMS. Since the very first moment I heard the sound of this genre, I fell in love and, from then on, there was nothing more pleasurable to me than listening to this type of music. Over time I became obsessed with the sound of it and I found myself totally interested in creating this genre. Then I decided to start my sound studies in London, UK in 2008.

– Musically speaking, what was the strangest inspiration you had so far?

– Sadly, it was when a close family member passed away two years ago. I was feeling things that I had never felt before and producing Psytrance was the only thing that made me feel better, even if I was in pieces. That’s when I truly experienced that music can help.

– Your most ‘psychedelic’ or life-changing experience so far?

– My biggest life-changing experience was when I first moved to the UK on my own 10 years ago. Here is where I became passionate about the darker side of Psytrance; I listened to many good artists who came here to perform, and this completely changed my visions and taste about Psytrance music. 10/15 years ago in Barcelona (where I originally come from) , Full-on was mostly all you could hear at Psytrance parties.
Another life changing experience were my sound studies. This has fullfilled me in many ways; sound has taught me a lot. It has also opened many sound doors that I didn’t even imagine could exist.
My latest biggest psychedelic experience has been taking part in Modem Festival for the past 2 years, especially the last edition in 2015. The decoration matched perfectly with the music, especially at night, it was truly another beautiful dimensional world.

– If you had to define what pure genuine psytrance is for you, which tracks or artists would you name?

– Ajja – We Are All Aliens, Ianuaria – Sternplatter, Arjuna & Atriohm – The Drunken Orchestra, Orestis – Elixir, Antonymous – Space Origins.

– Who do you consider the pioneers of psy?

– For me there are no “pioneers”, every artist is a different world, a different soul, and a different ear.

– What are some of the differences between psytrance when you got involved and now? Have you experienced any
noticeable changes in the scene?

– I feel that there are many more new underground psychedelic trance artists coming up, and I feel that this is good for the scene because it can open new minds and new dimensions for us all, while giving us new sound experiences, which I believe is really needed in the scene.

– How about the most cutting-edge newest sound makers in the scene? Who are your newest discoveries?

– One of my newest discoveries of this year was METRIX, a new member of Purple Hexagon Records that will release his first EP “Hypergiant” now in November, with a very fresh sound.
Also some of the artists coming from Sonic Loom records, such as Antonymous / Quadraphonic, Orestis, etc. I believe they are bringing truly psychedelic journeys/ sound experiences. This also goes for the “ Primal Contact” album from Arjuna on Parvati Records. I feel that there is huge and great work behind it, and that his sound has a major impact on the scene.

– What were some of the greatest challenges and rewards of your musical journey so far?

– My greatest challenge/ reward of my journey so far has been performing at Modem Festival in Croatia, especially this year with my two live projects. Along with finishing my Music Technology Specialist BA Hons studies in UK this summer.

– If it wasn’t psytrance, what would it be?

– I don’t think there can ever be a replacement for it, but if I had to choose, I think it would be painting, as I was into graffiti for many years before starting to produce psytrance. But no, let’s keep it this way ! 🙂
Which label/s do you think is/are shaping the scene the most or doing the most for the scene?

I think that the labels that are shaping the scene the most beside Purple Hexagon Records are: Sangoma Records, Blue Hour Sounds, Parvati Records, Sonic Loom, Shanti Planti, and Kamino Records.

– Which one of your releases/tracks are the most characteristic of your sounds or stand the closest to you for some reason?

– The ones that are most characteristic of my sound are DSL Psychology, released in my first V.A at Purple Hexagon Records (Quantum Animism), and Psycode Fungus in Woodog Records (V.A. Woodland Critters). However, one of the songs that I feel closer to me, also released, is Boom Blues from Loose Connection, remixed by me in my second EP “Complex Behaviour” with Purple Hexagon Records. The reason being that in the period while I was remixing it, I went through the most painful personal experience of my life and working on this track definitely helped me get through several parts of it.

– Side-projects? Experiments with new sounds and genres?

– For the past year and a half I have been working on a new solo project under the name of “TYNDRA”, which already has been performed this summer in two festivals: Inner Sanctum in Budapest and Modem festival in Croatia. This is a project I am experimenting with, but with a faster Bpm and a stronger touch than my other project.
I have also made different sound design related projects during my sound studies in London, which have also made me discover, learn and experiment with new ways to work with sound.

– What are you working on at present? Upcoming?

– At the moment I am working on various things. Firstly, on my second GELIKA compilation “Quantum Animism 2.0” at Purple Hexagon Records, which is expected to be released by May 2016. I am also creating the first solo album of the INSANE CREATURES project, also for Purple Hexagon Records , and probably an EP or a future album of my new side project TYNDRA. This is expected to be out in between one or two years from now.
