Conversation Series: OUTER SIGNAL

We caught up with Josh Lior of OUTER SIGNAL for a brief interview audio-illustrated with his selection of some very fresh and crispy new tracks for radiOzora’s wavelengths you can hear first on 24th October 2014 at 8pm on the Chill channel.

– You’re coming from a musical background with experiences in instrumental music and some experimenting with techno and analogue instruments as well… How did psytrance come into your life?

– My musical background is rock and heavy metal, playing with many kinds of instruments. In the early 90’s I started to experiment with electronic music ( techno, acid, house). Years later I was exposed to goa trance, I met djs that inspired me very much. The result was my passion for psytrance. My music combines all influences.

– So what is the “trademark” Outer Signal sound and style? What have been your main inspirations?

– I employ a variety of sources: from my background, electric guitar and complex synthesizer; the trance influence from the beginning and I’m always searching for innovation. My “trademark” is based on my relation with the music. I use my sounds to communicate with the world, with the people, my fans… It’s the Outer Signal: my signs and vibes to the people on the dance floor and the vibration that I also receive from all around when I play. To create is to allow these external and internal factors to manifest themselves through the music. The great influence on my music is Absolum and my inspirations come from the moments of life in the world, the cinema, music, art and human behavior in general.

– You started making electronic music in the late 90’s –  what was the scene like then and how has it evolved since then?

– In the 90’s I was exposed the first time to Goa Trance, around 1998 the psy appeared . It involved me and many people because of the unique sounds , style but with a variety styles. Since the beginning I became fascinated ! I started to study MUSIC and SOUNDS with a famous teacher in Israel, it was the moment it came to my life and stayed!

– Your experiences around the world? Inspirations, experiences, differences compared to the scene at home and other scenes around the world?

– I have been in Europe, Japan, Thailand, South America, Mexico, I LOVED all the countries where I played. It is always a new experience and unique.

Most memorable gigs, festivals? What would be your dream-festival or party and lineup – who would you most like to play after and before ideally?

– I had a great and crazy time in Thailand, there I played 23 times!!! And I want to be back there! Ozora is one of my dreams and I would like to play again in Japan, in Brazil. I would like to play with so many great artists. I love to play at all the time, everywhere. Isn’t easy to talk about favourites because I love all the people and music is my life.

– And what can you see as the future sound of Outer Signal? Do you have any future projects, collaborations, experiments in mind that you would really like?

– I’m working with a full power in my studio this year, building new stuff to surprise my fans. A remix is out and many tracks featured on various compilations, at top international labels. Also I released an EP. I’m always searching for how to innovate but also to preserve my style.

– And last but definitely not least, tell us a bit about the tracks and why you selected them for the radio listeners…

– The tracks that I selected for radiOzora listeners are more new, and new… so this is why I selected them.
